Pinkertons Hourglass Jewellers is definitely a local institution in the Casino area. The business first started in Casino in the very same premises over 70 years ago in 1933. Today Nella Pinkerton, wife of the late Clive Pinkerton, runs the store that has been in her family for so many years now. The story began with Clive Pinkertons father, who first established Pinkertons Hourglass Jewellery way back in 1912 in Crookwell, near Goulburn on the southern tablelands of NSW. Clive’s father then moved to Casino and opened the store at 126 Barker Street in 1933. Clive who has recently passed away, trained as a Jeweller, Watchmaker and Optometrist. Clive also served in the Airforce during World War II. He was also a notable race horse trainer, with many wins under his belt, including the Casino Cup in the 1950s. Nella and Clive’s son Gary, expanded the business to Molesworth street in Lismore in 1960, which there became known as the Lismore Jewell Centre. Nella has customers who have been coming back to her shop for over 40 years now. Some of these bought engagement or wedding rings and are still returning all these years later! So next time you call in to Pinkertons Hourglass Jewellery, take a moment to look around and soak up the nostalgia, then try to imagine what Casino was like 70 odd years ago when the store first opened! |
