Giardia, which swept across Sydney in 1998, hit millions of residents hard due to contaminated water.

Rainwater tank owners are the most at risk of contracting the parasite Giardia due to stagnant and untreated tank water. Symptoms of Giardia include diarrhoea, nausea, stomach cramps, dehydration, fatigue and weight loss.
